Chalk paint (or sidewalk paint) is such a great way to get the kids outside and learning!
How to make chalk paint.
You will need:
- 1 cup cornflour
- 1 cup water
- Food colouring (we use powdered colouring as the colour will be much more vibrant)
Put the cornflour into a large mixing bowl slowly add the water while stirring. Add a little more water or cornflour to get the consistency required. Separate into pots and then add food colouring until you have the desired colours.
As you can see we do letters and numbers on our pavers! There are lots of fun learning games you can do once they are done. Here are a couple of examples that my children love.
Skip counting. Have them start at number 1 and jump over one number (so they are on 3) ask them “what are you on now?”. Then continue the pattern to 5, 7 and 9. Use the opportunity to explain odd numbers. Then start at number 2 and do the same with even numbers!
Adding. Patterns, numbers that add up to 10. Stand on number 1 and then jump on remaining numbers and count out loud how many more until they reach 10. Stand on 2 and jump and count how many numbers to 10. And so on. Say things like “Did you notice that pattern? 1 plus 9 equaled 10 and so did 2 and 8″
Letter recognition. Call out letters and the children run to jump on that letter.
Spelling. Call words and have them spell the word by jumping from letter to letter.
