I recently purchased Tiny By Nicola Davies Illustrated by Emily Sutton – it explains what microbes are and what they do in such a wonderfully simple yet fun way. The first time we read it, the kids were amazed! We could not stop the flood of questions that followed. So I decided it was time to start an Introduction to Microbes area for them to explore a little more
We already had The Squid, the Vibrio & the Moon (which you can still purchase through this link) which is a beautifully illustrated story about the amazing symbiosis between the Hawaiian Bobtail squid, Euprymna scolopes, and the bioluminescent bacteria. We had read and enjoyed the book previously although, with our new understanding of what it is about, the kids now ADORE this book!
In the area I included some pretty coloured origami paper, scissors, glue and needles and thread for microbe-making craft. See our Mega Microbes here!
This great colouring sheet is from education.com The kids and I found this page which helped William to learn that there are certain types and shapes of bacteria. He wanted to learn more so I printed the pictures of bacteria from the page for him to review. I then printed them two more times, one copy I cut out with the name attached and the other I cut separately to the name so he could match the correct shape and name.
